The Most Requested Searches Nationwide
Every quarter, our physician search firm conducts an analysis of the most in demand physician specialties based on nationwide job postings by healthcare facilities. This analysis is compiled in our Demand Indicator Map, an interactive tool showing the demand by state (click here to try it out). This week, we took a look at our requests from current healthcare facility clients and what searches they requested the most. We assist these facilities to locate qualified candidates for their open physician needs.
It’s no surprise that primary care topped the list of most requested searches to be filled. The rush to find primary care physicians is in response to the projected physician shortage and the expected spike in patients once access to health insurance becomes more widespread. Another concern is the growing population of elderly persons in the United States, which is expected to exceed 72 million in our lifetime. This growing population sector will require the most medical care in the next few decades. Care that will mostly be administered by primary care physicians and mid-level providers, i.e. nurses and physician assistants.
The second most in demand, most requested group of physicians are surgeons – mainly orthopedic and general surgeons. The growth of the elderly population also directly correlates with the demand for these surgeons. A study titled, The Aging Population and its Impact on the Surgery Workforce, conducted by several physicians and printed in the Annals of Surgery showed that there will be an increase in surgical services for the population composing the 65 and older age group. The most common surgery for baby boomers is knee replacement, which is performed by an orthopedic surgeon (see more common surgery types for baby boomers in this article).
