How many times have we all heard the phrase “location, location, location”?  This phrase is typically used when describing a piece of property or real estate.  In recruitment however, we are well aware that location is a word that encompasses far more than a house on a tree-lined street or a corner lot.  For physicians, the traits that they seek in a location encompass many points from personal to professional.  The family environment, geographic attributes, population, and the medical climate can all be determining factors up for consideration and they are different for each physician.  The factor that physicians value most according to this Medscape survey is a comfortable, enjoyable living environment.  As the terms comfortable and enjoyable mean different things to each physician it becomes our responsibility to define them with each candidate and share information about our communities that relate.  If we find ourselves presenting opportunities just based on the location, location, location before discovering the traits a candidate finds important then we run the potential of leaving out a key piece of information that could make our opportunity the right one.

According to the Medscape survey here these are the 6 most important traits physicians seek in a practice location:

  1. Comfortable, enjoyable living environment: 69%
  2. Family and friends live nearby: 45%
  3. Relative value of my specialty: 39%
  4. Climate or temperature: 34%
  5. Job opportunities: 31%
  6. Malpractice climate and premiums: 24%

3 questions recruiters should ask during a screen to find out a candidate’s location preferences:

What community activities are you involved in?

Are you relocating to be closer to family and/or friends?

What makes a community enjoyable for you to live in?

3 questions physicians should ask themselves when making location their top priority:

Am I willing to make less for location?

What about my practice is a must-have, regardless of location?

What will my spouse/significant other need in a community to be happy?
